Statutory rape is an act of sexual intercourse accomplished with a person who is not the spouse of the perpetrator and is a minor (under 18 years of age). Any person who engages in an act of sexual intercourse with a minor who is more than three years younger than the perpetrator is guilty of a felony, whereas if the minor is not more than three years younger than the perpetrator, it is a misdemeanor.
A conviction for statutory rape can included severe punishments including:
- Imprisonment
- Sex Offender Registration for life
- Probation or Parole
- Rehabilitation programs
- Loss of custody and/or prohibition from being alone with minors
- Monetary fines
Being convicted or accused of a sex crime, such as statutory rape, can seriously damage your personal record. Relationships with friends, family,
coworkers and significant others can be adversely affected. If you have been accused of statutory rape in California, it is necessary to have an
experienced defense lawyer on your side. Do not take the chance of losing your freedom by choosing an incompetent lawyer or, worse, choosing to represent yourself.
